Helps with
A new baby
A new baby in the family: feeling left out, jealous and loving, all at once.
The tool your child practises in the story
Big sibling jobs and special time
Offer one or two small, real jobs each day, like choosing a sock, singing to the baby or fetching a toy, and thank your child for them. Keep ten minutes of special time every day, with no baby and no phone, and let your child choose what you do. Call it by its name so it is something to look forward to, and keep it even on busy days.
For grown-ups
What this story is about
A new baby has come home, and your child feels left out, jealous and loving, all at once. The story welcomes every one of those feelings. Your child says the feeling out loud and asks for what would help, and two small things do: real big sibling jobs, and a little special time every day, just with you.
Three ways to talk about it
- Name the feeling without fixing it: "It sounds like you miss having me all to yourself. That makes sense."
- Let your child say hard things about the baby without being told off. Every feeling is allowed; hurting is not.
- Notice out loud when your child helps, and how the baby responds: "Look, the baby listens to your voice."
Three questions to ask
- What was the prickly feeling in the story? Have you ever felt it too?
- Which big sibling job would you like to do for our baby?
- What would you like us to do in our special time?
Practise the tool together: Big sibling jobs and special time
Offer one or two small, real jobs each day, like choosing a sock, singing to the baby or fetching a toy, and thank your child for them. Keep ten minutes of special time every day, with no baby and no phone, and let your child choose what you do. Call it by its name so it is something to look forward to, and keep it even on busy days.
If your child's jealousy or sadness is very strong, lasts for weeks, or shows up as trouble with sleep, eating or the toilet, it is worth talking to your paediatrician or a child psychologist.
From a photo to the book
One phone photo is all we need. Here is Freya's photo and the cover we made from it.

Invented example: Freya is a made-up child, not a customer. The photo was made for this example; the book was made from it the same way we make yours.
Look inside
Twelve illustrated spreads: the picture on the left, the story on the right. These sample pages show an invented child called Freya.

Every night, Freya patted the bed. "Count with me!" One paper star for everyone in the family. Big ones. Middle ones. And one just the right size: "That one's MINE." Then, one night, along came a tiny new paper star. "Soon we'll need one more. A baby is coming!"
Next morning: "Would you like to choose the baby's socks?" Plain ones? Or the ones with little moons? The moons, of course! "A job just for me!" On went one sock. On went the other. Kick! Off flew a moon sock, and it landed, plop, right on Freya's head. The baby gurgled. It sounded a lot like a laugh.
The lamp went off, and the ceiling began to glow. All the big stars. The middle ones. The just-right one. And the tiny new one, right beside it. "Goodnight, little star," whispered Freya. From the next room came a sleepy sigh. As if to say: goodnight.

Every night, Mia patted the bed. "Count with me!" One paper star for everyone in the family. Big ones. Middle ones. And one just the right size: "That one's MINE." Then, one night, along came a tiny new paper star. "Soon we'll need one more. A baby is coming!"
